Listener's Log: For Your Love by The Yardbirds

Album: For Your Love
Artist: The Yardbirds
Release Date: 13 June 1965
Date Listened: 25 March 2018
Remarks: Say what you want about the Stones, the Who, or the Beatles. But it was the Yardbirds that really invented rock n roll. Sure, those other bands are great, but there's an urgency, even on this early attempt, and a raw power to the recordings of the birds that dwarfs the poppier sounds of the Beatles and the primitively recorded Stones. Even the cuts that aren't any good really (A Certain Girl, Good Morning Little Schoolgirl) there is an intensity that = rock n roll. Also! Beck > Clapton. No, I'm not sorry.
Stand Out Tracks: I'm Not Talking, I Ain't Got You, I Ain't Done Wrong

Listener's Log: A Love Supreme by John Coltrane

Album: A Love Supreme
Artist: John Coltrane
Release Date: January 1965
Date Listened: 15 March 2018
Remarks: The truth is, this is not my first spin of this album. I've been carefully absorbing it for maybe 6 months. It's quite beautiful and musically challenging. I love to put it on and get lost in the music.

Listener's Log: Trilogy by ELP

Album: Trilogy
Artist: ELP
Release Date: 6 July 1972
Date Listened: 11 March 2018
Remarks: Definitely not my favorite ELP record, but undeniably a classic with some very strong tunes.

Listener's Log: Sorcerer by Tangerine Dream

Album: Sorcerer
Artist: Tangerine Dream
Release Date: July 1977
Date Listened: 11 March 2018
Remarks: A bit of an experiment for me; a soundtrack to a movie I haven't seen. Not their best, but quite enjoyable with a few killer tracks.
Stand Out Tracks: Main Title, The Call, Creation, The Journey, Grind, Rain Forest, Abyss, The Mountain Road, Impressions Of Sorcerer, Betrayal (Sorcerer Theme)

Listener's Log: Pictures at an Exhibition by ELP

Album: Pictures at an Exhibition
Artist: Emerson, Lake, and Palmer

Incidentally, this pairs well with the works of Philippe Druillet.

The Smile Sessions by Brian Wilson and The Beach Boys

Album: The Smile Sessions
Artist: Brian Wilson
Release Date: Sometime between 1967 and now
Date Listened: 9 March 2018
Remarks: I'm not quite sure what to say. Whatever my expectations were, this album blew them all away. It seems likely that had it been completed it would've been a much better album than Pet Sounds, at least by my taste. I guess I'll have to listen to it again.
Stand Out Tracks: Our Prayer, Heroes and Villains, Do You Like Worms, Cabin Essence, Child, The Elements, Love to Say Dada, Good Vibrations

Listener's Log: Wheels of Fire by Cream

Album: Wheels of Fire
Artist: Cream
Release Date: July 1968
Date Listened:  March 2018
Remarks: Wheels of Fire is basically tied with Disraeli as best Cream album, so far. Towards the end of this short journey, I'm more or less of the same opinion about Cream. Their records are generally lacking in energy and the number of banal numbers outweighs the number of masterpieces. But such masterpieces!
Stand Out Tracks: White Room, Passing the Time, As You Said, Pressed Rat and Warthog, Deserted Cities of the Heart, Anyone for Tennis, Crossroads, Spoonful, Traintime, Toad (Drum Solo)
